Spud

Spud is an 8 year old neutered male pug crossed with a sprinkle of Chihuahua and dash of Parsons Jack Russell!

Spud came in to the rescue after an incident with the toddler in the household, the toddler was in his food bowl while he was eating and it resulted in a nip ( only enough to bruise the skin) This was totally out of character for Spud and he has been in the same home his whole life. His owners decided that they just could not have him in the house anymore due to their child being frightened.

As with all of our dogs Spud went straight to the vets, on examination he was covered in fleas and due to having allergic skin disease his skin was on fire (allergic skin disease is when the skin over reacts to a parasite bite or allergen, one flea bite alone can make the dogs skin feel on fire! an equivalent would be us walking naked through a cloud of midges), his mouth was unbelievably painful and he was in desperate need of a dental, full painful anal glands and to top it all an ear infection. We believe the incident with the child was just pain related.

When Spud arrived he was quite anxious about being touched, no aggression but not comfortable. A week later his fleas had gone, his anal glad’s cleared, his ear infection gone, his skin healing, and a whopping 17 rotten teeth removed!
Well we have a completely different dog! He is happy, relaxed, playing with the other dogs like a puppy and loving life!!
He has been going to the groomers for regular special baths to help heal his skin, which he absolutely loves!! He is a big baby about his claws, however with desensitising training he is improving rapidly, he shows zero aggression, but he reminds me of a naughty toddler that does not want their socks on and becomes a Yoga pro when removing his paw from your grip!! lol

Spud is fantastic with other dogs and desperately wants to play, however the girls here snub him! They have allowed him to spoon them in the dog beds but that is it! lol Spud had no lead manners when he came in to the rescue and constantly pulled, this has massively improved, however he will need ongoing training to improve this (Spud is not the brightest button, so repetition is the key) is fab off the lead and has learned to come to the whistle, he is fab with cats, small animals, horses, cows, sheep and goats. However Spud will copy anything his friends do, so if they chase a sheep he will follow, he has no idea what they are doing, but he just follows for the fun!!
Due to Spuds incident with the toddler we would prefer him to go to a home with children over the age of 12 and he would not be suitable for a home with regular visiting toddlers. He has not shown any further issues with toddlers, we have met several out on walks and he has taken treats nicely from them, however it is a risk we feel best avoided, as I feel that Spud was as traumatised and confused by the incident with the child. Spud is good to be left for up to 4 hours and travels beautifully in the car.
This wonderful little man has had the all clear from the vets and as long as his flea treatment is kept up to date and he is fed a good quality diet, he should have no further health issues.

Spud is a goofy loveable boy, many people have said he is ugly, but I think he is cute!!lol He is not the brightest button, but he just wants to be loved and to please you. He is a bundle of fun and is up for giving anything a go for a treat or two. This little man could pretty much slip in to most households.
